When Johnny Ward's gold mining days were over he settled in Yale and became a freighter. He was a well-known figure for many years driving his teams along the old Cariboo Wagon Road from Yale to Barkerville. When the CPR put a end to freighting he went into the hotel business. One of his hotels used to stand across the tracks from the Church.
