Historic Overview of Yale
Charles Evans's Obituary

Charles Evans died suddenly at Yale, Colony of British Columbia, on March 14 1871. Still a young man, he was in his thirty-second year. (His marriage record in United Church Archives gives his age as twenty-six on the wedding day; but he probably had his twenty-seventh birthday before the end of the year. This would coincide with the belief that he was born in 1839.)

A magistrate, and resident of Yale for eight years, Charles Evans had been in the employ of Mr. Francis J. Barnard (as manager for Barnard's Express) for most of that time.

Mr. Evans had a special interest in Colonial affairs; and was a delegate for Yale when the Confederation League held a convention there in May, 1868. This was a time of considerable controversy as to whether or not the Colony of British Columbia should join with the other provinces of Canada. (Confederation took place on the 20th of July. 1871.)

Charles Evans was buried in the Yale Cemetery. The grave marker has since decayed (or, if made of stone, has become undecipherable). (It is thought that the cemetery records and maps of grave locations were destroyed in a fire many years ago.)

Mr. Evans was given a Methodist burial service (United Church Archives does not have burial records for that year in their possession).

The name "Evans" appears on old tombstones in gold-rush towns of the interior; but none were related to Charles Evans.

A well known personality in the town of Yale, and in the Chilliwack area; of Mr. Evans, it was said that he was generally liked and respected by all who knew him.

Charles Evans was survived by his wife, Jane, and three young children, all of whom were born in Yale; John Allen, 1867; Charles Henry, 1868; and Sar- ah Ellen, 1869.

(The descendants of Charles Evans have been given permission by the Yale Ratepayers Association to place a memorial stone in Yale Cemetery.)
