Charles Evans Background

Of Welsh origin, Charles Evans was born in 1839, In Rochdale (near Manchester), Lancashire, England. His father, John Evans, contractor, was believed to have been from Cardiff, Wales. Charles had at least two sisters and a brother who was an engineer.

Having relatives in Canada West (Ontario), Charles emigrated to the area in the late 1850's. A bookkeeper, he found employment in the Kingston area. In March, 18629 his address was Delta P.O., Leeds County, Canada West. Forty miles from Kingston; Delta was situated on Beverly Lakes.

Charles Evans was a medium-tall man, with dark complexion and brown eyes. His friend in Delta was Lyons Davison; the son of a local farmers With another companion, James Guthrie, they left Ontario-on March 24, 1862, on a journey to the Pacific Coast.

British Columbia had experienced a goldrush at Yale; and the Cariboo district of the Colony was now famed for its strikes. Travelling by stagecoach through the State of New York to New York City; the steamer, "North Star", was taken to Panama. Narrow gauge railway cars provided transportation over the Isthmus.

Charles took passage on the steamer, 'Sonora", to San Francisco where a five day stopover was welcomed, as provisions on board had been very poor.

Six weeks after leaving Ontario, the party landed at Esquimalt, Colony of Vancouver Island. They had boarded the 'Sierra Nevada' at San Francisco. A four mile walk ended In Victoria.

Upon his arrival, Charles Evans visited Methodist Ministers, Dr. Ephraim Evans, and soon to be ordained, Mr. Daniel Lucas. Mr. Lucas had arrived from Farmersville, Leeds County, (Ontario) a short time earlier.

Dr. Evans had been stationed in Victoria since 1859; his previous post being Kingston, during years 1857 and 1858. Born at Kingston-upon-Hull, England, in 1803; he emigrated to Canada in 1820. His father, James Evans, had been a captain in His Majesty's Transport Service.

(It is not known whether or not Charles Evans and Dr. Ephraim Evans were related.)

Charles Evans kept an account of his trip from Delta, Leeds County, Canada West (Ontario) to Victoria, Vancouver Island.
