Spear and Ring
Ring and Spear

Make Your Own Ring and Spear
Use green twigs to make a ring shape about 30cm in diameter. The Thompson River First Nations would then wrap long, thin pieces of animal hide around enclosed capsules of sand that were placed against the ring. You could wrap fabric around plastic bags filled with small amounts of sand. The sand was to provide weight to the rolling ring. Once wrapped and secure (nothing will fall off the ring while it is rolling on the ground), you can make your spear.

The spear could also be a twig that is fairly straight. To give it a grip you could wrap hockey tape around it or some other type of tape (masking, duct, electrical...) This will give it a little more weight which will help it travel farther. The point of the spear does not have to be sharp, a rounded tip will work best.

How to play:
The object of the game is not to "spear" the ring but either shoot through it or shoot in front of it so as to trip up the ring stopping it from rolling.

Start the ring rolling by throwing it ahead of you. It should roll on it's outer edge, fairly straight. Then with spear in hand, run after it and try to throw the spear through the middle of the ring (very tricky) or in the ground in front of the ring so it trips the ring and stops it from rolling.

THE MORE YOU PRACTICE THE BETTER AIM YOU WILL GET!

Remember never to throw your spear near other people or in uneven areas. You could hurt yourself or someone else.
